PITTSBURGH, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- An RBI single by Garrett Jones helped Pittsburgh edge St. Louis 6-5, temporarily preventing his team's 17th straight losing season.

His second hit and only RBI snapped a 5-5 tie with one out in the bottom of the ninth, capping a two-run rally.

Ryan Doumit's pinch RBI single created the tie.

Ronny Cedeno hit a two-run single.

Lastings Milledge had one RBI, while Jason Jaramillo had three hits and one RBI for the Pirates, had lost their previous six contests against the Cardinals.

The winner was Jesse Chavez (1-4).

Albert Pujols led St. Louis with three hits and one RBI.

Rick Ankiel hit a pinch ninth-inning solo homer.

A run scored on Jaramillo's first-inning error, and two others had one RBI for the Cardinals, who failed to get a three-game sweep.

The losing pitcher was closer Ryan Franklin (2-2).
