NEW YORK, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- American Melanie Oudin pulled off one of two major surprises Thursday that rocked the second round of the U.S. Open.
Oudin, 17, stunned fourth-seeded Elena Dementieva for the biggest victory of her career. Oudin rallied for a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 decision that set up a third-round match against Maria Sharapova.
Sharapova won her night match against Christina McHale 6-2, 6-1.
Jelena Jankovic, last year's runner-up and the No. 5 seed this year, became the other big upset victim when she fell to Yaroslava Shvedova 6-3, 6-7 (7-4), 7-6 (8-6).
Top-seeded Dinara Safina avoided the upset bug, struggling to defeat Kristina Barrios 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-3. The match lasted 2 hours, 13 minutes, during which Safina had 15 double faults and 38 unforced errors.
Safina has been forced to three sets in her first two matches.
In other second-round action, Shahar Peer was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Carla Suarez, No. 9 Carolina Wozniacki breezed past Petra Martic 6-1, 6-0 and No. 13 Nadia Petrova defeated Julie Coin 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
Sara Errani eliminated 19th-seeded Patty Schnyder 7-5, 6-2.
