PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- Pedro Martinez surrendered a run and just five hits in seven innings Thursday, leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a 2-1 win over San Francisco.
Martinez (3-0) did not walk a batter in 87 pitches and struck out nine. The only run he allowed was a lead-off homer by Eugenio Velez in the top of the first.
Philadelphia scored on Jayson Werth's second-inning solo homer and Ryan Howard's sixth-inning RBI double. Jimmy Rollins and Carlos Ruiz had one hit each for the National League East-leading Phillies, who have won four of their last six games.
Velez had two of the six hits for the Giants, who remain one game behind the Rockies in the NL wild-card race after Colorado lost 8-3 to the New York Mets.
Losing pitcher Tim Lincecum (13-5) allowed two runs and four hits in seven innings with a walk and 11 strikeouts.
