
CHICAGO, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- Carlos Torres and two others combined on a six-hit shutout Thursday as the Chicago White Sox defeated the Cubs 5-0.
Torres (1-0), in his third career start, surrendered five hits in seven innings with no walks and six strikeouts.
Matt Thornton and D.J. Carrasco threw scoreless eighth and ninth innings.
Scott Podsednik led a 13-hit attack with three hits, while Carlos Quentin, Alexei Ramirez and A.J. Pierzynski each had two hits and one RBI for the White Sox, who have won two in a row after losing eight of nine.
Jake Fox had two of the six hits for the Cubs, who have lost three of five.
Losing pitcher Ryan Dempster (8-8) yielded three unearned runs and nine hits in seven innings and struck out seven.
The inter-league contest at Wrigley Field was a make-up from the one postponed by rain on June 16.
