DETROIT, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Rookie Rick Porcello allowed five hits in seven-plus innings Wednesday and Detroit took advantage of five Cleveland errors to down the Indians 4-2.
Detroit won for the third time in four games and increased its American League Central lead over Minnesota to 4 ½ games.
Porcello (12-8) did not walk a batter and threw only 80 pitches. He was removed after giving up a leadoff homer to Travis Hafner in the eighth.
Detroit scored an unearned run in the first thanks to a throwing error by second baseman Luis Valbuena and one of its two fourth-inning runs came courtesy of a throwing miscue by third baseman Jhonny Peralta.
Three Detroit relievers combined to throw two scoreless innings. Fernando Rodney put runners on first and third with one away in the ninth, but earned his 31st save when Peralta grounded into a double play to end the game.
Aaron Laffey (7-4) gave up all four runs, but was betrayed by his defense in taking the loss. He had been unbeaten in his previous five starts.
