Mets' Santana, Perez both have surgery

NEW YORK, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- New York Mets pitcher Johan Santana had arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow and Oliver Perez had a similar procedure on his right knee Tuesday.

Santana had bone chips removed from his throwing arm. Perez had scar tissue removed from the patella tendon of his knee. Both players are out for the rest of the season but are expected to be ready for spring training in 2010.

Santana was 13-9 this season with a 3.13 earned-run average in 25 starts.

Perez managed a 3-4 mark with a 6.82 ERA in 14 starts.
