MLB: New York Yankees 5, Baltimore 1

BALTIMORE, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Andy Pettitte lost a perfect game bid with two outs in the seventh inning Monday in the New York Yankees' 5-1 victory over Baltimore.

The 37-year-old Pettitte (12-6) gave up only two hits in eight innings and moved into sole possession of third place on the Yankees' all-time wins list with his 190th victory.

Nick Swisher had a home run, a double and two RBI for the Yankees, who opened a 6 1/2-game lead on Boston for the American League East lead.

Melvin Mora homered for Baltimore. Adam Jones broke up the perfect game when he reached on an error in the seventh and Nick Markakis followed with a single to spoil the no-hitter.

Baltimore's Jeremy Guthrie (9-13) worked six innings and suffered the loss.
