CARSON CITY, Calif., Aug. 30 (UPI) -- David Beckham scored the game's lone goal in the 80th minute Saturday, leading Los Angeles to a 1-0 win over Chivas USA.

It was the first goal this season by the popular Beckham since he rejoined Los Angeles earlier this summer following a stint overseas with AC Milan.

He scored on a free kick into the Chivas penalty area, past goalkeeper Lance Parker.

It sent a raucous crowd of 27,000 at the Home Depot Center into a frenzy and gave the Galaxy (9-4-11, 38 points) some breathing room in second place in the Western Conference standings.

They have won seven of their last 10 contests and rose to 2

1 against their Southern California rival.

The Goats (10-9-3) remained in fourth place in the West with 33 points.

They attempted nine shots, while Parker made five saves, to three for LA goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts.
