
ST. LOUIS, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- A go-ahead sixth-inning RBI single by Albert Pujols Sunday lifted St. Louis past Washington 2-1, capping a three-game sweep.
His second hit snapped a 1-1 tie with one out in the bottom of the sixth after a wild pitch by Garrett Mock left first base open.
Rick Ankiel had one RBI, while Colby Rasmus also had two hits for the Cardinals, who opened a 10-game lead over the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central.
Winner Adam Wainwright (16-7) became baseball's winningest pitcher in 2009 on his 28th birthday, giving up a run and three hits in six innings with three walks and seven strikeouts.
Closer Ryan Franklin earned his 35th save.
Washington's run scored on a sixth-inning single by Elijah Dukes.
Three others has one hit for the Nationals, who have lost 10 of 13.
Mock (3-6) surrendered two runs and four hits in six innings.
