FLORHAM PARK, N.J., Aug. 26 (UPI) -- Rookie Mark Sanchez will be the starting quarterback for the New York Jets in their 2009 season opener Sept. 13 against the Houston Texans, Coach Rex Ryan said.

Ryan made the announcement at a news conference, saying he decided to open the season with Sanchez, the fifth overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft in June out of Southern California, instead of four-year veteran Kellen Clemens.

"That's not a slight to Kellen Clemens at all," Ryan told reporters. "I think we can win with Kellen, also as a quarterback (but) right now I think Mark gives us the best opportunity to win. This was strictly my decision. I think (Sanchez) has everything, all of the things you look for."

Sanchez completed 5-of-10 passes for 43 yards with one touchdown and an interception in Monday's 24-23 pre-season loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
