Top two seeds win in Pilot Pen

NEW HAVEN, Conn., Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Nikolay Davydenko and Fernando Verdasco, the tournament's top two seeds, both advanced past the second round Tuesday at the Pilot Pen in New Haven, Conn.

Mardy Fish, a two-time finalist in the event, was eliminated in the final tuneup for next week's U.S. Open.

Davydenko survived a battle with Robert Kendrick 7-6 (12-10), 6-3 and Verdasco coasted past Paul Capdeville 6-0, 6-3.

Davydenko will next face Fabrice Santoro and Verdasco will meet Andreas Seppi.

Fish was knocked out of the tournament by Rajeev Ram 6-3, 6-3. Fish lost in last year's final to Marin Cilic.

In another surprise, third-seeded Tommy Robredo fell to Jose Acasuso 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5).

Igor Andreev advanced with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Kevin Kim; Victor Hanescu ousted Janko Tipsarevic 6-4, 6-7 (8-10), 6-3; Bjorn Phau defeated Nicolas Almagro 2-6, 6-3, 7-5; and qualifier Frederico Gil won over Philipp Petzschner 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (10-8), 6-3.
