NEW HAVEN, Conn., Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Sam Querrey, who at No. 6 was the only seeded player in action Monday, survived a three-set match to reach the third round of the Pilot Pen in New Haven, Conn.

Querrey outlasted Marc Gicquel 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2 to become the first player to earn a berth in the tournament's third round. He set up an encounter with either ninth-seeded Nicolas Almagro or Bjorn Phau.

Among the first-round surprises Monday were Frederico Gil's 6-4, 6-3 decision over Marcos Baghdatis and a win for Rajeev Ram over Nicolas Lapentti 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (7-3).

Top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko will be in action Tuesday for a second-round match with Robert Kendrick. No. 2 seed Fernando Verdasco will take on Paul Capdeville.
