NEW HAVEN, Conn., Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Amelie Mauresmo and Anna Chakvetadze became the first two players to reach the quarterfinals Tuesday at the Pilot Pen in New Haven, Conn.
Mauresmo, the eighth seed, cruised past Alona Bondarenko 6-1, 6-1 and Chakvetadze outlasted Sybille Bammer in their second-round match 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. Bammer has a recent victory over Serena Williams to her credit, but has been unable to back up that big triumph with a tournament win.
Those were the only second-round matches played Tuesday in the tuneup for the U.S. Open.
No. 2 seed Caroline Wozniacki, who reached the fourth round at Wimbledon this year, reached the second round with a 6-0, 6-0 blasting of Edina Gallovits.
Third-seeded Flavia Pennetta also sailed into the second round by disposing of Ioana Olaru 6-1, 6-2.
No. 1 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova will be in action Wednesday. A win in that match would set up a quarterfinal meeting between Kuznetsova and Mauresmo.
