NEW YORK, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Josh Hamilton highlighted a five-run fourth that gave Texas the lead Friday and the Rangers held on for a wild 10-9 win over the New York Yankees.
Texas took a five-run advantage into the bottom of the ninth, but the Yankees scored four times and had runners on first and second with nobody out.
Closer Frank Francisco, however, got Nick Swisher to pop out on a bunt attempt and Melky Cabrera then lined into a double play to end New York's rally.
Texas stayed within 1 ½ games of Boston for the lead in the American League wild-card race.
New York took a 4-0 lead in the first, with Jorge Posada hitting a two-run homer. Texas trailed by only two heading into the fourth and then put six consecutive batters on base in that inning after two were away.
A two-run single by Hamilton accounted for the last of the runs in the fourth and homers by Nelson Cruz in the fifth and Michael Young in the seventh helped the Rangers protect a seemingly comfortable advantage.
Jason Grilli put the first two New York batters on base in the ninth and Francisco struggled to put out the fire after he replaced Grilli.
After Alex Rodriguez walked to load the bases, Hideki Matsui and Jorge Posada singled in runs and Robinson Cano drove in two more with a base hit before the New York comeback ran out of steam.
Starter Kevin Millwood (10-8) got the win, having left the game with the Rangers owning an 8-5 lead.
Joba Chamberlain (8-4) suffered the loss, giving up seven runs on nine hits in four innings.
