TORONTO, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Carlos Pena hit a pair of two-run homers Tuesday and the Tampa Bay Rays added to their success against Toronto this season by downing the Blue Jays 7-3.
Pena's homers came in the second and third innings, helping the Rays built a quick 6-1 lead.
Tampa Bay defeated Toronto for the 11th time in 14 meetings this year and stayed within three games of Boston for the lead in the American League wild-card race.
James Shields (8-10) allowed eight hits but only three runs in 6 1/3 innings to get the win. Shields had gone 1-4 in his previous five starts.
Both of Pena's homers came off Brett Cecil (5-3), who surrendered five runs on six hits in 3 1/3.
Pat Burrell led off the Tampa Bay second with a single and Pena followed with a homer to right. Burrell was also on board in the third when Pena produced the third and fourth runs of the inning with his 37th homer of the year.
It was Pena's fourth two-homer game of the season and his second in the last four days.
