MIAMI, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Young Miami Heat forward Michael Beasley is going through counseling at an undisclosed rehabilitation center in Houston, Miami media report.
The Miami Herald reported Tuesday multiple sources had confirmed Beasley, the 20-year-old No. 2 overall pick in the 2008 NBA draft, has been working on psychological and apparent drug-use issues for some two weeks now.
"It's true that Mike is in Houston, and he went out there to work
out," said Bruce Shingler, a live-in personal adviser. "Mike has had some issues. As far as all of the rumors out there, I can't tell you anything."
A poor-quality photo that appeared on the Internet last week showed Beasley sporting a new tattoo with what appeared to be two plastic bags in the background, prompting speculation they contained marijuana, the Herald said. Beasley also has posted comments on Twitter recently intimating life wasn't worth living, the newspaper said. He has had previous links to drugs, as well.
The circumstances of Beasley's admission to the program were unclear. Team and NBA spokesmen had no comment on the situation.
The South Florida Sun Sentinel reported two sources it described as familiar with the situation said Beasley was at the rehab facility before the photo flap.
"He's compliant out in Houston, just trying to do everything that is
asked of him at this particular moment," Shingler told the Sun Sentinel. "He's OK right now."
Shingler said the Twitter posts had been "taken out of context."
Beasley, who was an All-American in one season at Kansas State, averaged 13.9 points and 5.4 rebounds for the Heat last
season.
