NEW YORK, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- The New York Mets announced Tuesday Johan Santana will undergo surgery to remove bone chips from his left elbow and will miss the rest of the season.
Team officials had previously said Santana would miss his scheduled start Tuesday against Florida. Tests Tuesday, however, revealed the severity of the problem.
No date was set for the arthroscopic procedure that will clean up the bone chips. Santana is expected to recover in time for next year's spring training.
Manager Jerry Manuel said Monday Santana had been in discomfort since the All-Star break.
"But not at the level of discomfort he has now," Manuel said.
Santana finishes the 2009 season with a 13-9 record and a 3.13 earned run average in 25 starts. This was his second year with the Mets.
