TULSA, Okla., Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Tim Jackson shot a 2-under 68 Monday to lead after one day of qualifying at the U.S. Amateur Championship.

Playing in near 100-degree heat and facing the challenge of the Southern Hills Country Club, Jackson, 50, took a one-shot lead midway through the 36-hole qualifying portion of the tournament.

The top 36 players after Tuesday's second round will advance to the match play portion of the event. The 36-hole final is set for Sunday.

Southern Hills has hosted both the U.S. Open and PGA Championship on multiple occasions. Cedar Ridge Country Club, which hosted the 1983 U.S. Women's Open, is also being used for qualifying.

Although most challengers for the U.S. Amateur title are in their collegiate years, Jackson shared the lead after the first and second rounds of this year's U.S. Senior Open.

He had a one-shot lead over Matthew Broome, John Peterson, Will Strickler and Cameron Tringale -- all of whom shot 69 at Cedar Ridge.

Rickie Fowler, who will be a member of his second straight U.S. Walker Cup team next month, shot a 71 at Cedar Ridge and was tied for 12th place.
