
SAN DIEGO, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Chris Carpenter and two relievers combined on a four-hit shutout Saturday, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 7-0 win over the San Diego Padres.
Carpenter (14-3) gave up three hits in seven innings with three walks and six strikeouts.
Relievers Kyle McClellan and Dennys Reyes hurled one inning apiece.
One of two hits by Matt Holliday was a three-run homer.
Ryan Ludwick had two hits and one RBI.
Rick Ankiel and Colby Rasmus had one RBI each, while Brendan Ryan added two hits for the Cardinals, who have won eight of 10.
Will Venable, David Eckstein, Adrian Gonzalez and Chase Headley each had one hit for the Padres, who have lost 10 of 11.
Losing pitcher Kevin Correia (8-10) gave up five runs and 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings.
