SAN DIEGO, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Clayton Richard threw six shutout innings and struck out six Friday in San Diego's 4-0 victory over St. Louis.
It marked the Padres' first win over the Cardinals in 11 tries.
St. Louis entered the contest having won 11 of its last 13 games. But Richard and four relievers cooled the Cards.
Richard (7-3) has gone 3-0 since he came to the Padres in the trade that sent former NL Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy to the Chicago White Sox.
Nick Hundley gave the Padres the lead with a three-run homer in the second and they added a run in the eighth on an RBI single by Kevin Kouzmanoff.
Kyle Lohse (4-8), who pitched four innings, gave up the Hundley homer.
