TORONTO, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Two home runs by J.D. Drew and a three-hit effort by Jon Lester Thursday carried the Boston Red Sox to an 8-1 decision over Toronto.
The Red Sox, who went into the evening's action with a one-game lead in the American League wild-card race, swept the three-game series.
Drew forged a 1-1 tie in the third with his 14th homer and finished off a three-run fourth with a two-run blast. Victor Martinez added a solo shot in the seventh as one of Boston's 10 hits.
Toronto contributed to its troubles with three errors that led to two unearned runs.
Lester (10-7) worked eight innings and struck out five. The only run he allowed came in the first on a double play grounder off the bat of Rod Barajas.
Rookie Brett Cecil (5-2) made his first start since injuring his left knee when he fell trying to field a bunt Aug. 8 against Baltimore. He gave up four runs on six hits in 4 1/3 to take the loss.
