SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- Rookie fullback Brit Miller scored two touchdowns Friday, and San Francisco spoiled a late two-point conversion attempt to edge Denver 17-16.

Miller caught a 3-yard pass from Alex Smith in the second quarter to give the 49ers a 10-0 lead in their exhibition opener, then took a short pass from Damon Huard in the fourth quarter and turned it into a 40-yard scoring play.

Huard followed the second Miller touchdown by hitting Bear Pascoe with a two-point conversion pass, giving San Francisco a 17-10 lead with 7:55 to play.

Denver scored with 1:52 remaining on a 52-yard pass from Chris Simms to Kenny McKinley, but rather than kick an extra point to tie it, the Broncos went for two. Simms failed to connect with McKinley on the attempt.

Denver quarterback Kyle Orton, obtained in a trade that sent quarterback Jay Cutler to Chicago, completed 9-of-16 passes for 89 yards. Orton was intercepted three times.

Simms was 11-of-17 with two touchdowns.
