PHOENIX, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- Dan Haren ended a recent slump with an eight-inning, eight-strikeout effort Friday that boosted Arizona to a 4-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Haren (12-7) had gone 1-2 over his four previous starts with an ERA of 6.26 in those outings.
He held the Dodgers to six hits and walked two, giving up the only Los Angeles run on a Matt Kemp homer in the fifth.
Chad Qualls worked the ninth for his 22nd save, but not without some drama. Qualls walked Casey Blake to open the inning, and Blake moved to third on a one-out double by Kemp.
The Arizona closer then struck out Orlando Hudson and got pinch-hitter Mark Loretta on a liner to right to end the game.
Los Angeles lost its second straight and remained five games in front of Colorado in the National League West.
Arizona scored all its runs in the fourth, one of them coming in on a single by Haren. It was his eighth RBI in 53 at bats this season.
