NEW YORK, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- Bobby Parnell held San Francisco to three hits and struck out seven in six innings Friday, boosting the New York Mets to a 3-0 blanking of the Giants.
San Francisco lost for the fourth time in five games, managing only four hits overall.
Parnell (3-4) appeared in his 56th game of the season, but made only his second major league start. He lasted a mere 2 1/3 innings in his first start last Saturday against San Diego, but did not walk a batter in a solid effort against the Giants.
New York had only five hits, but did enough damage to pick up a second straight win.
Angel Pagan hit a solo homer in the first, Jeff Francoeur had an RBI double in the fourth and Gary Sheffield contributed a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Francisco Rodriguez worked the ninth for his 26th save. The loss went to Barry Zito (8-11), who gave up three runs on five hits in five innings.
