BALTIMORE, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- A Baltimore television station reported Thursday that Olympic swimming superstar Michael Phelps was involved in a minor automobile collision Thursday.

WMAR-TV said Phelps was driving a sport utility vehicle that collided with another vehicle at an intersection in downtown Baltimore Thursday night.

The report said no one was injured and police had determined that alcohol was not involved.

Phelps became the first athlete ever to win eight gold medals in a single Olympics at last year's Beijing Games and has won 14 Olympic gold medals overall. He had five victories in six events in Rome during the recently completed World Swimming Championships.

His image suffered this year when a British newspaper published pictures of him smoking marijuana.

Phelps apologized in a statement saying he "engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment."

"I promise my fans and the public -- it will not happen again," he said.
