SAN DIEGO, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Former football star Lawrence Phillips was ordered to appear for sentencing next month after being convicted in San Diego of twice assaulting his girlfriend.
The 34-year-old Phillips, a standout at Nebraska before moving on to the NFL, faces up to 25 years in state prison after being found guilty of seven counts, including false imprisonment and assault with great bodily injury.
He was charged with choking his then-girlfriend on two occasions in 2005 during domestic incidents in which he accused the woman of infidelity.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reported the jury deliberated for less than a day before delivering the verdict Tuesday. Sentencing was set for Sept. 8.
The conviction was by no means Phillips' first scrape with California authorities. His rap sheet dates back to 2000 and includes a 10-year prison sentence handed down last year for striking four people with his car in Los Angeles in 2005.
