Sprint race at Watkins Glen rained out

Published: Aug. 9, 2009 at 8:23 PM

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y., Aug. 9 (UPI) -- A thunderstorm Sunday forced the postponement of the Sprint Cup Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips auto race in Watkins Glen, N.Y.

This is the second straight week a race was postponed by rain. Last week, it was the Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono.

Officials announced the postponement until noon Monday just before the command was given to start engines at 4 p.m. EDT.

NASCAR decided there was not enough daylight left to run the advertised 90-lap distance in its second road course race this season.

Jimmie Johnson will start on the pole after winning Friday's qualifying session. He has yet to win at either Watkins Glen or Sonoma, Calif., the site of the Toyota/Save Mart 350 in June.

Kurt Busch will start second, followed by Denny Hamlin, Marcos Ambrose, who won Saturday's Nationwide Zippo 200, and David Stremme.
