NEW YORK, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz, a fan favorite and five-time All-Star dubbed "Big Papi," told reporters in New York Saturday he has never used steroids.
A recent New York Times report linked Ortiz and his former Boston teammate Manny Ramirez to a 2003 report about which baseball players tested positive for using performance-enhancing drugs.
"I definitely was a little bit careless back in those days when I was buying supplements, vitamins, over-the-counter," he admitted during a news conference. "(But) I never bought steroids or used steroids. I'm not here to make many excuses or anything. I used a lot of supplements and vitamins. I never thought buying supplements or vitamins it was going to hurt anybody's feelings. This past week has been a nightmare to me. I'm the kind of guy that thinks about the fans every day. I try to do things the right way."
He added the entire list should not be released.
