
CLEVELAND, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- Aaron Laffey allowed just one unearned run in the longest outing of his career Wednesday, boosting the Cleveland Indians to an 8-1 victory over Minnesota.
Laffey (5-3), who is in his third major league season, and was making his 34th career start, went eight innings while giving up six hits. He struck out five and walked one in bringing the Indians their eighth win in 12 games.
The Twins slipped 3 ½ games behind division-leading Detroit in the American League Central.
Cleveland built a 4-1 lead through 5 ½ innings and then broke the game open in the sixth with four runs.
Grady Sizemore, Asdrubal Cabrera and Shin-Soo Choo all had RBI doubles in the sixth.
Francisco Liriano (4-11) suffered the loss, giving up four runs on eight hits in five innings.
Liriano is tied with Baltimore's Jeremy Guthrie for most losses in the American League.
