NEW YORK, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Arizona starting pitcher Brandon Webb, who has been out since Opening Day with a right shoulder injury, had season-ending surgery Monday, the team said.
Webb, a 22-game winner last season, had the procedure done in Arlington, Texas, the team announced in New York prior to Monday's game with the Mets.
The 2006 NL Cy Young Award winner had previously announced he did not need surgery, after visiting three specialists. He originally said he hoped to be back by September.
Webb's contract expires at the season's end, although it has a team option at $8.5 million.
Webb, 30, is 87-62 lifetime with a 3.27 earned run average in seven seasons with the Diamondbacks.
