CHICAGO, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- Melky Cabrera hit for the cycle, driving in four runs and scoring three for the New York Yankees Sunday in an 8-5 win over the Chicago White Sox.
Cabrera had a three-run homer, an RBI single, a double and a triple, becoming the first Yankee to hit for the cycle in almost 14 years.
The Yankees roughed up Sox star Mark Buehrle to avoid losing a four-game series and held onto their half-game lead over Boston atop the American League East. The Red Sox beat Baltimore 18-10.
Jermaine Dye and Jim Thome homered for Chicago.
CC Sabathia (11-7) was the winner, giving up five runs and 10 hits in seven innings, and Mariano Rivera racked up his 30th save of the season.
Buehrle (11-5) allowed seven runs and 12 hits in 4 1/2 innings. In his two previous starts, Buehrle tossed a perfect game against Tampa Bay and retired the first 18 batters he faced against Minnesota, setting a major league record by retiring 45 hitters in a row.
