MLB: Kansas City 4, Tampa Bay 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Aug. 2 (UPI) -- Mitch Maier drove in three runs for Kansas City, which struck late to break up a no-hit bid by Tampa Bay's James Shields Sunday and beat the Rays 4-1.

Maier drove in a run in an eighth-inning rally started by John Buck, who got the Royals' first hit of the game. Maier then singled in two more runs in the ninth.

Ben Zobrist homered for Tampa Bay.

Brian Bannister (7-7) got the win, allowing five hits in seven scoreless innings, and Joakin Soria picked up his 18th save of the season.

Loser Shields (6-8) gave up two hits in 7 1/3 innings.
