OAKLAND, Calif., Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Ryan Sweeney gave Oakland a quick start with a two-run single in the first Friday and the Athletics capitalized on three errors to defeat Toronto 8-5.
Oakland scored three unearned runs in dealing the Blue Jays their third straight loss.
Sweeney also drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk during Oakland's four-run fourth that gave the Athletics an 8-1 lead. Rajai Davis contributed a two-run single in the fourth.
Dallas Braden (8-9) got the win despite giving up five runs on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings.
After Toronto chipped away at its deficit, thanks in part to a two-run homer in the seventh by Adam Lind, Andrew Bailey was called on in the ninth to pick up his 14th save.
Scott Richmond (6-6) lasted only three innings in absorbing the loss. He gave up four earned runs on seven hits.
