Woods storms into contention at Buick Open

GRAND BLANC, Mich., July 31 (UPI) -- John Senden took the lead at the Buick Open Friday and Tiger Woods rushed into contention by shooting his lowest round in two years.

Senden posted a 6-under 66 at the Warwick Hills Country Club for a 36-hole total of 14-under 130.

Michael Letzig was alone in second at 132 after shooting a 65. Vaughn Taylor and Bill Lunde shared third place at 133.

Woods appeared to be in danger of missing a second straight 36-hole cut, something he has never done in his record-setting career. He said after his first-round 71 that he would shoot whatever score he needed to be around for the weekend and he did a lot better than that -- firing a 9-under 63 to move from a tie for 95th into a share of fifth place at 134.

He was tied with Kevin Stadler, Roland Thatcher, Y.E. Yang, Greg Chalmers and Jimmy Walker. Woods played the first five holes in 6-under.

"Yesterday, I didn't hit my irons as close and I certainly didn't putt good at all," Woods said. "Today, I hit my irons a little closer and I made some putts. Even though I three-putted 18 and missed a few out there, I also made a bunch, too."
