White Sox get Jake Peavy from San Diego

Published: July 31, 2009 at 7:01 PM

CHICAGO, July 31 (UPI) -- The Chicago White Sox acquired right-hander Jake Peavy from the San Diego Padres just before Friday's non-waiver baseball trading deadline.

The deal consummated their effort to land the 2007 National League Cy Young Award winner.

Peavy refused to eliminate his no-trade clause in May when the teams worked out the parameters of a deal.

His status for the balance of the 2009 season is in limbo because he is on the disabled list with a strained tendon in his left ankle and has not pitched since June 8.

Peavy, 28, is 6-6 with a 3.97 ERA in 13 starts (81 2/3 innings).

He has a 92-68 record with a 3.29 ERA, only 435 walks and 1,348 strikeouts.

In return, the Padres got right-handed pitchers Adam Russell and Dexter Carter and left-handers Aaron Poreda and Clayton Richard.
