Andreev advances to Swiss Open semis

GSTAAD, Switzerland, July 31 (UPI) -- Igor Andreev, the 2008 runner-up, beat Jeremy Chardy 6-3, 6-3 during Friday's quarterfinals at the Swiss Open tennis tournament in Gstaad.

Andreev, the event's third seed, is trying to win for the first time since 2005, when he captured three tournaments.

Friday, the Russian saved the one break point he faced and won 70 percent of his first serve points, avenging a 4-6, 6-4, 4-6 loss to his French opponent at the Medibank International at Sydney in January.

Also Friday, sixth-seeded Nicolas Kiefer of Germany lost 3-6, 1-0 to Brazil's Thomaz Bellucci. Kiefer retired in the second set because of a left ankle injury.

Brazilian Marcos Daniel downed Frenchman Florent Serra 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) and Germany's Andreas Beck topped Romanian Victor Crivoi 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

Saturday's semifinal matchups will be Andreev vs. Bellucci and Beck vs. Daniel.
