SANDY, Utah, July 30 (UPI) -- Tim Howard made seven saves in regulation Wednesday and then stopped three penalty kicks to bring Everton a 4-3, shootout victory over the MLS All-Stars.
The game was decided in a shootout after being tied at the end of regulation 1-1.
It was the first time in six games since Major League Soccer began using the current All-Star Game format that the stars of the American league have lost to an international opponent.
Howard is the current United States national team goalkeeper, but he also plays with Everton and was the key to the outcome.
He stopped penalty kick efforts by Brad Davis, Davy Arnaud and Freddie Ljunberg. Kasey Keller stopped two shots in the shootout for the All-Stars.
Louis Saha gave Everton the lead in regulation and Davis tied it for the All-Stars.
