CINCINNATI, July 29 (UPI) -- Mat Latos retired the first 10 men he faced in his third career start Wednesday and held Cincinnati to one hit, carrying San Diego to a 7-1 win over the Reds.
Latos (2-1) allowed only two base runners over seven innings and had a 5-0 cushion before he went to the mound.
Cincinnati starter Aaron Harang (5-12) surrendered two homers in the first inning -- a two-run blast by Adrian Gonzalez and a three-run shot by Kyle Blanks. The homer by Gonzalez was his 28th of the season.
The Reds did not manage a hit until Jerry Hairston hit a one-out homer in the fourth. The only other base runner off Latos came on a lead-off walk to Craig Tatum in the sixth.
Greg Burke and Michael Ekstrom each worked an inning of relief to complete the one-hitter.
San Diego won for just the third time in 11 games, but the Padres have downed the Reds in five of their six meetings this season.
Cincinnati has dropped eight out of nine. Harang is winless in his last 12 starts (0-8).
