ANAHEIM, Calif., July 29 (UPI) -- Gary Matthews Jr. drove in three runs with a double in the eighth inning that carried the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim past the Cleveland Indians 7-6 Tuesday.
Matthews lined a pitch off Tony Sipp into the left-center gap with the bases loaded to stake the Angels to a 7-4 lead that held up even though closer Brian Fuentes, who leads the majors with 30 saves but blew a save chance Monday, surrendered a pair of runs in the ninth inning.
Matt Palmer (9-1) picked up his first win out of the bullpen with three scoreless innings. Indians starter David Huff (5-5) took the loss after giving up five runs on eight hits in seven innings.
Cleveland scored single runs in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead, but the Angels racked up three in the third on RBI by Robb Quinn, Erick Aybar and Bobby Abreu.
Cleveland tied the score in the fourth and took a 4-3 lead in the fifth on Jhonny Peralta's solo home run.
Los Angeles came back in the eighth when Juan Rivera drove in a run with a single with two aboard, setting the stage for Matthews' bases-clearing double.
