SAN FRANCISCO, July 29 (UPI) -- The San Francisco Giants have lost future Hall of Fame southpaw Randy Johnson until September due to a partially torn rotator cuff.
Johnson, 45, has been moved from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list and can be activated no earlier than Sept. 4.
He said on the team's Web site that the injury was discovered during an MRI earlier this week.
"This is basically one more speed bump in the road of my career," Johnson said.
He added that he is motivated by San Francisco's playoff chances and that rehabbing his shoulder offers him the best chance to return to action but surgery is not a likely option.
"We're still optimistic that we can get him back on the mound (this season)" Manager Bruce Bochy said.
Johnson is 8-6 with a 4.81 ERA.
Fellow left-hander Barry Zito (6-10) becomes San Francisco's No. 2 starter.
