
ANAHEIM, Calif., July 28 (UPI) -- The Cleveland Indians purchased the contract of infielder Andy Marte Tuesday from their Class AAA affiliate in Columbus.
Marte, 25, takes the roster spot of first baseman Ryan Garko, who was traded to San Francisco Monday. He spent last season with Cleveland but hit just .221 with three home runs and 17 RBI batted in 80 games.
Marte was batting .327 with 24 doubles, 18 home runs and 66 RBI in 82 games this season for Columbus. He leads the International League this season in on-base plus slugging percentage (.963) and slugging (.593), ranks second in RBI, is tied for second in homers and extra base hits (43), and is third in batting average.
Over four seasons in the majors, the last three with Cleveland and his first with Atlanta, Marte has played in 174 games and is a career .211 hitter with nine homers and 52 RBI.
