Dementieva, Petrova win at Stanford

STANFORD, Calif., July 28 (UPI) -- Third-seeded Elena Dementieva and fifth seed Nadia Petrova won their opening round matches Monday at the Bank of the West Classic at Stanford, Calif.

Dementieva eliminated Anne Keothavong, 6-1, 6-4 and Petrova dropped Bethanie Mattek-Sands, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

Seventh seed Agnieszka Radwanska beat Sorana Cirstea, 6-0, 6-1.

In matches involving unseeded players, Melinda Czink beat Alisa Kleybanova, 6-0, 7-5; Monica Niculescu topped Meghann Shaughnessy, 6-1, 6-0; and Maria Sharapova beat of Ai Sugiyama, 6-4, 6-7 (6-8), 6-1.
