NEW YORK, July 27 (UPI) -- Chicago White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle was named the American League Player of the Week Monday for hurling a perfect game.
Buehrle, a four-time All-Star, threw his gem July 23 in a 5-0 win over Tampa Bay. It was only the 18th unblemished game in modern Major League Baseball history and the first since Randy Johnson did it for Arizona against Atlanta in 2004.
Other AL players considered for this week's honor were Cleveland's Cliff Lee, who went 2-0 with a 1.69 earned run average, the Los Angeles Angels' Erick Aybar, who rapped a league-high 14 hits, and Toronto's Aaron Hill, who hit .346 with four homers.
