Six world swimming records fall in Rome

ROME, July 26 (UPI) -- Six world records fell Sunday in the World Swim Championships in Rome.

Germany's Paul Biedermann set a world record with a time of 3:40.07 in the 400-meter freestyle.

Italian Federica Pellegrini broke her own world time in the women's 400-meter freestyle, finishing in 3:59.15.

Germany's Britta Steffen beat her own record with a time of 52.22 in the opening leg of the 4x100 freestyle relay.

American Ariana Kukors set a world mark of 2:07.03 in the 200-meter individual medley,

Swede Sara Sjostrom, 15, set a world record of 56.44 in the 100-meter butterfly.

The Netherlands 4x100 women's freestyle relay team surpassed its own world record with a time of 3:31.72.

The United States Olympic champion 4x100-men's freestyle relay team won the gold medal in the Rome competition.

The team of Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte, Matt Grevers and Nathan Adrian won in 3:09.21, edging Russia (3:09.52) and France (3:09.89).
