NEW YORK, July 24 (UPI) -- Major League Soccer has fined David Beckham $1,000 for confronting a fan during a 2-2 draw against AC Milan during a July 19 exhibition match.
The Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder confronted the LA Riot Squad, a group of Galaxy supporters, at the whistle before halftime. The group had booed and jeered him and displayed derogatory banners about the English international team, for which he played this year before reporting to play for the Galaxy.
"We support our players interacting with fans, whether it is at clinics, charity events or by high-fiving their supporters in the stands while celebrating a goal," MLS Commissioner Don Garber said. "However, our players should never engage in conduct that can be interpreted as encouraging fans to come out of the stands and onto the field, regardless of the reason."
A member of the group left the stands after issuing a challenge to Beckham and was arrested.
