The game was a matchup of teams with the two worst records in the National League. San Diego ended a five-game losing streak and won for only the fourth time in July.

Latos (1-1) was making his second major league appearance, having been drafted by the Padres in the 11th round three years ago. He gave up five hits, two of them solo homers, and struck out five over 5 2/3 innings.

Garrett Mock (0-4) took the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits over 5 1/3. It was his 41st major league outing, but only his fifth start.

Washington committed four errors and lost for the eighth time in 10 games.
