USA reaches Gold Cup title match

Published: July 23, 2009 at 9:33 PM

CHICAGO, July 23 (UPI) -- Clarence Goodson scored late in the first half and Kenny Cooper scored late in the game Thursday to give Team USA a 2-0 CONCACAF Gold Cup win over Honduras.

The Americans will play for the tournament championship Sunday against either Mexico or Costa Rica. The United States ran its goal total in the tournament to 12 -- and the goals have been scored by 10 different players.

Stuart Holden assisted on both the goals against Honduras. American goalkeeper Troy Perkins made four saves in recording the shutout.

Holden lofted a corner kick in the closing moments of the first half and Goodson headed it into the net from the top of the 6-yard box.

Perkins made a dramatic save on a close-in shot in the 84th minute to preserve the lead and Cooper then clinched it by scoring into a virtually empty net off a perfect feed from across the box by Holden.
