Adam LaRoche had two hits and drove in a run and Andrew McCutchen had three hits and scored twice for the Pirates -- who beat Milwaukee for the first time since May 22, 2008, breaking a 17-game losing streak to the Brewers.
Jeff Karstens held the Brewers hitless in a three-inning relief stint. There was a brief bench-clearing confrontation in the eighth when Milwaukee reliever Chris Smith hit Karstens in the left elbow with a pitch.
Mike Burns (2-3) took the loss, allowing six runs on six hits over three innings with two walks and three strikeouts.
Newly acquired second baseman Felipe Lopez had four hits, one walk and a run scored, and Ryan Braun had a two-run homer for the Brewers, who lost for the sixth time in their last nine games.
