WITTELSHEIM, France, July 19 (UPI) -- A police motorbike accompanying Tour de France cyclists killed one person and injured two others in Wittelsheim, France, authorities said.

The woman, in her 60s, died at the scene Saturday while a 37-year-old woman and a man in his 60s were hospitalized, Radio France Internationale reported Sunday.

The collision occurred when the victim tried to cross the road after a breakaway group of riders had passed, but before the main group of riders had arrived.

Fatal incidents involving spectators have been rare in the 106-history of the race. The last fatality occurred in 2002 when a boy died after being hit by a Tour de france publicity car, RFI reported.
