Ivanov wins 14th Tour de France stage

BESANCON, France, July 18 (UPI) -- Russian Serguei Ivanov used a late attack out of a breakaway group Saturday to win Stage 14 of the Tour de France.

Italian Rinaldo Nocentini, meanwhile, held on to his yellow jersey for another day.

Ivanov, of Team Katusha, rode to the solo victory over the last few miles after surging out of a breakaway group that had been away from the peloton for much of Saturday's 124-mile stage from Colmar to Besancon, France.

It was Ivanov's second career Tour de France stage win. He took the stage in 4 hours, 37 minutes, 46 seconds, while Nocentini held onto the overall leader's jersey by finishing in the main group, 5 minutes, 36 seconds behind Ivanov.

Nocentini's retention of the jersey, however, came only after a challenge from George Hincapie, an American who helped Lance Armstrong to all seven of his Tour de France victories. He started the day 5:25 behind Nocentini in the overall classification, but he moved up to second overall, missing grabbing the yellow jersey by 5 seconds.

Spain's Alberto Contador finished the stage at third overall at 6 seconds back and Armstrong fell to fourth at 8 seconds behind.
